This is a first, and for good reason. The Zookeeper’s Wife releases today in theatres, so we decided to post our first ever #DearPhotograph in video format! When we visited the Warsaw Zoo back in February, this was the photo I was looking forward to sharing with you all the most.
Dear Warsaw Zoo,
You are a place of safe haven for hundreds of people trying to escape turmoil. But you are also a place of love and life for the animals of the zoo. Whether elephants were exploring on the roof, the hippos were being fed or an injured bird was being cared for by your Zookeeper’s - this place is special. It’s special because of the history it holds and the stories it tells. Jan & Antonina Żabiński made this zoo into what it is today, a place of life.

Dear Warsaw,
The wall still standing today is a testament of time to what happened here in Warsaw. This particular wall was part of Umschlagplatz, a holding area set up by Nazi Germany adjacent to a railway station in occupied Poland, where the ghettoized Jews were being assembled for deportation to death camps. The Zookeeper and the Zookeeper’s Wife, devised a plan to save hundreds Jews from this holding area. - Taylor

Dear Warsaw,
On the other side of these walls is where Jan & Antonina Żabiński saved hundreds of lives during WWII. They would sneak them out of the Ghetto to the Warsaw Zoo, where eventually they would find a safe haven for them to start a new life.

Dear Warsaw,
Your city was demolished to ruins during WWII. But the acts of courage and bravery still echo in time and will for years to come. This photo is proof of what happened during the Holocaust. We must always remember.

Dear Warsaw Zoo,
Antonina Żabińska used to spend hours taking care of the animals in her zoo. But that was only part of her job. During the invasion of Poland by the Nazis in WWII, Antonina sheltered 300 Polish Jews using the underground pathways and hideouts in the depths within the zoo. Her heroics impacted more than she could of ever anticipated.

Today, we are excited to announce a new collaboration with Focus Features and their new movie releasing March 31st, The Zookeeper’s Wife! Last month, we travelled to Warsaw, Poland to travel back in time and relive real moments caught in time from the Zoo and throughout the city. Over the next few weeks, we will be sharing those photos with you.
To kick off today’s first photo, we focus on the courage and bravery from The Zookeeper’s Wife, Antonina Żabińska. She was a woman who didn’t just think of herself, but the animals she cared for and women, children and men throughout Warsaw. Her courage will never be forgotten. #InternationalWomensDay #IWD2017
Dear Warsaw,
The love and care of this women’s hands and heart is unfathomable. Not only were the animal’s lives changed, but she saved the lives of hundreds of Polish Jews during WWII. Thank you Antonina, for being a woman of love and courage. Your story will never be forgotten.
Love, Taylor
